I love Batman. I’ve always been a fan of Gotham City’s Dark Knight. I remember watching the cheesy 70’s version on TV as a kid. I lived for it. Every week I would turn on the tube and hope for a new and fantastic episode. “To the Batmobile Robin!” I can still hear Adam West’s voice as Bruce Wayne, and see Dick Grayson rushing to the bookshelf, lifting the statue, hitting the switch, and speeding down the poles to the Bat Cave! (Though I never understood how they changed into their super hero garb—those high-tech duds—so quickly. Go figure.) I had the comics, the action figures, and the batmobile.
So, as you can imagine, my adult self wanted authenticity when I headed over to the theatre last week. Please, I begged the movie industry, don’t release some imposter Batman movie that promises more than it delivers. Unfortunately, some have done that very thing . . . I really don’t even need to name the 90s cinematic culprits, do I?
As for Batman Begins (2005), I was skeptical. I expected to be disappointed again. But let me just say: Awesome! I loved it from start to finish. Christopher Nolan's movie explores the origins of the Batman legend. He includes all the important scenes: the death of Bruce’s parents, the discovery of the Bat Cave, the making of the Bat, and the introduction of Bruce Wayne as a rich playboy. He found a way to introduce new story lines, as well as all the modern technology, without losing any of the feel that comes from classic Batman. I was well into the story, when none other than Morgan Freeman emerges. Way to go Nolan! If you want to make your movie a real winner, choose Freeman for some part of the film. I can’t wait for the “boy wonder” to be introduced in part II and for the dynamic duo to hit the streets of Gotham together. One request: Keep Christian Bale as Batman! Do not even think about casting Tom Cruise to play opposite Katie, no matter how much he begs for it on Oprah!
